Abstract
Pain is a major determinant of quality of life for people with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The fatigue, weakness, and stiffness that commonly accompany pain in RA and OA also contribute to a decreased quality of life. Fortunately, in recent years clinicians and researchers have learned much about effective ways to manage pain. This evidence-based guideline provides information about current approaches to the treatment of acute and chronic pain that can be used in the management of OA, RA, and juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA). As new scientific evidence becomes available it should be possible to expand the treatment options, and there likely will be need to modify recommendations (and modification of the current treatment recommendations will likely follow).
